What America Wants from Italian Fashion

Ermanno Scervino brings a Florentine idea of craftsmanship to a new generation of American luxury consumers

There is something about Italian fashion that travels particularly well. Perhaps it is the craftsmanship, perhaps the confidence with which beautiful materials are treated, or simply the idea that what we wear should still contain a trace of the place where it was made.

For Ermanno Scervino, that place is Florence.

The Italian fashion house has built its identity around a distinctly contemporary interpretation of Made in Italy, one where craftsmanship is not preserved behind glass, but worn, mixed and continually reinterpreted.

Today, that language is finding an increasingly interesting audience in the United States.

Florence, with an American accent

American luxury has always had a particular relationship with Italy. It appreciates heritage, certainly, but it also wants clothes that work in New York, Los Angeles, Miami and everywhere in between.

Ermanno Scervino sits comfortably between these two worlds.

Its collections bring together tailoring and lace, cashmere and embroidery, denim and sophisticated construction. There is a sense of contrast throughout, masculine shapes can meet delicate fabrics, an everyday cardigan can become an exercise in craftsmanship, while a bag can carry the decorative vocabulary usually reserved for eveningwear.

It is Italian luxury without the need to constantly announce itself.

And the pieces attracting attention in America offer an interesting portrait of what today’s customer is looking for.

The cardigan, the dress and the bag

Consider a cropped cardigan in pure cashmere with covered buttons.

At first glance, it is an uncomplicated wardrobe piece. Look closer and the appeal becomes clearer, precious material, considered proportions, careful construction. It is the sort of quiet luxury that works as naturally in Manhattan as it does in Florence.

Then there is the long lingerie style dress in linen and cotton lace, a very different expression of the same house.

Here, Scervino’s relationship with femininity becomes more visible. Lace and lingerie references are treated not as decoration alone, but as part of the architecture of the garment. Romantic, certainly, but with enough precision to prevent it becoming nostalgic.

And then there is the Maggie Bag in nappa leather with embroidery.

Accessories are increasingly important in the way international customers first encounter a fashion house. The Maggie Bag translates the Scervino vocabulary into a more immediate object, leather, embroidery, craftsmanship and a recognisable Italian sensibility contained in a single piece.

Three products, three rather different expressions of the same idea.

A wardrobe rather than a uniform

That variety matters.

The Italian luxury womenswear collection is not defined by one silhouette or one hero product. Dresses, tailoring, knitwear, denim and outerwear coexist as different expressions of the same design language. Ermanno Scervino

What connects them is an approach to materials.

Cashmere is allowed to feel luxurious. Lace remains delicate. Leather becomes a surface for embroidery. Tailoring provides structure, while softer pieces introduce movement and femininity.

The result is less about creating a recognisable uniform and more about building a wardrobe.

Made in Italy, seen from America

The United States provides an interesting lens through which to look at this evolution.

Ermanno Scervino has a physical presence in two distinctly American expressions of luxury, Beverly Hills in California and Bal Harbour in Florida. From Rodeo Drive to the Miami area, the setting changes considerably, but the proposition remains rooted in Florence.

The boutiques provide something that matters particularly for a house built around materials and construction, the possibility of touching the product.

Cashmere, embroidery, lace and nappa leather tell part of their story visually. The rest becomes apparent only at close range.

This perhaps explains why Made in Italy continues to retain its appeal in an increasingly digital luxury market. Origin is not simply a label. At its best, it can still be felt in the object.

The luxury of knowing where something comes from

Fashion is global, but good luxury remains surprisingly local.

For Ermanno Scervino, Florence continues to provide the vocabulary, craftsmanship, experimentation, materials and an instinctive understanding of how apparently contrasting elements can live together.

America provides another perspective.

The latest Ermanno Scervino New Collection continues this conversation between heritage and experimentation, bringing together tailoring, cashmere, wool, leather, silk, embroidery and couture details. Ermanno Scervino

From a cashmere cardigan to a lace dress and an embroidered Maggie Bag, what travels across the Atlantic is not simply a collection of Italian products. It is an idea of how contemporary luxury can look and feel.

And in a market crowded with things designed to be instantly recognised, there is still considerable appeal in something made to be discovered.
